As JSeery mentions, the originals WERE copper-coated STEEL.

A great alternative today, for fuel OR for brake tubing is Authentic "CUNIFER" brand tubing. This stuff is used for OEM Volvo brake lines, and they are sticklers for safety. It bends easily, and double flares beautifully as seen in the pictures below. Make sure what you're getting is actually "CUNIFER" brand, as some imitations have a thinner wall-thickness.
