For those of us not in the direct path of the current fires, we endure the heavy smoke instead. Smoke has been terrible for almost 2 weeks with visibility occasionally down to a hundred feet. Like driving in dark grey fog with ash in it.

Most people leave the area and seek shelter elsewhere. Some stay and defend their homes. The news likes to pick on those who choose to stay and save their homes, which works out well and they succeed 99% of the time. For those not familiar with Cal Fire policy, this might seem foolish. The reason some people choose to stay and defend is because firefighters don't defend homes. They do nothing! Their job is to set up lines and try to contain fires like this. They are instructed to not defend structures at all.

Fires suck, but I still prefer them over tornadoes.
