I spent a lot of time chasing this, as I had a hard time believing that it was the air filter element causing the problem. I finally got sick and tired of getting nowhere, put the K&N back in the box, installed the stock element, and drove the car.
I will admit I am a bit uncomfortable with the way this ended up, but the problem was solved and I had other fish to fry.

Certainly unusual for sure but wonder why?
