The bolt that holds the push rod to the brake pedal arm should have an eccentric on it along with a shoulder. There should be some "play" between the push rod and the brake pedal arm.

Make sure the brake pedal arm comes all the way back to the rest position with the push rod disconnected. There should be a spring to return it to the rest position. Insert the bolt and twist it until there is "slop" then hold it and tighten the nut.
