I think you will find they are heavier but that is not really the point, it is the weight distribution that matters, all that weight on relatively thin metal, all forward of the load bearing surface. The exhaust port brackets spread the load.
Marts friend technically did nothing wrong, by that he was following the same procedures as a lot of you guys have done using bell housing method but it went wrong and whilst I have heard of a good few disasters using this method, I have not heard of any problems using the exhaust port brackets.
I would not presume to be an expert, having only had three engines on stands for rebuild, it was Vern Tardel who recommended the exhaust bracket, good enough for me.
Marts photos may not be enough proof for some people and good luck to them, but I would rather not take chances with flatheads and gravity.
