Sounds like step 1 of a multi-step scam plan.

First they get name and contact information for a "helpful person" in your area. Helpful people are so helpful that they don't think that they are being setup.

They contact this helpful person and send them a bogus cashier's check for work to be done on the car.

The check is for too much money, or they guy cancels the work for some reason and asks that the money or the excess money be wired back to him.

The wire transfer back to the bad guy goes through at the speed of light. The bogus check that you deposited takes 2 or 3 weeks to come back to your bank as bad, fake, etc. and the money is taken back out of your account by your bank. But you already sent the refund to the guy, and you are out the money.

This is related to the "I want to buy your car, I will send you a check" scam.
