I use the yellow plastic bondo spreaders you pick up at swap meets etc. Place the thin edge between the hubcap and wheel then use a flat screwdriver to pry against the yellow spreader. Have done this for years with no paint chips etc.

Nice method Pat, kinda like using wide putty knives to protect drywall/trim when prying kick boards/mop boards/trim off drywall. Going to try this instead of my method above, next time.
