Wow!! You guys are great! It seems to me that the likely culprit is the soft plug. It fits the observations very well. Right at the bulge in the block. I'll drop the pan again and check it out. BTW, B&S, this is an early v8. Orig to the 34. Fingers crossed. I'll let you know what I find.

Are the plugs easily obtained? I haven't checked, yet.
