Two different engine were produced in 1938. It was the first year for the 24-stud heads and the last year for the 21-stud heads. Stampings have some known meanings but casting numbers not so much. If it has a big 59 on the back half bell then it narrows it to post war but that's about it. Engines of different years have different characteristics so a person has to go by that. After all these years, it could have about any flathead V8 save an 8BA type if it has a half bell on the back.
This was our best ID thread back when all the pictures were still there. Photobucket stuff got dropped but it still has a lot of information.
