Hi Phil, I too have just fitted my top wood kit during my restoration. I read your original post and 3/4" sounds like a lot! My metal header cap had been repaired many years ago by inserting a piece of steel in behind it so it wouldn't sit snug over the wood header. I removed that repair. I'm no expert (my first Model A) but these wood headers often need a lot of 'tweaking' to achieve the best fit. Mine is less than 1/8 gap in that area now. The curved ends of the cap should sit flush against the steel header and a 3/4 gap probably wouldn't allow that I think? Good luck.
