Credit cards were unheard of at the Long Island gas station I worked in during the late 1950's and early 1960's. The $ 0.40 oil bottles were refilled nightly from bulk oil containers.

Bruce, I see you are from Northport. My summer job in 1969 was pumping gas, fixing flats and changing spark plugs at "Country Life" Shell in Fort Salonga. When I have a few minutes I will add my memories to this great thread.
