I use Simple green, white vinegar, and ammonia in varying amounts depending on type of gunk. Start with more simple green, changing out the water to more and more vinegar or ammonia as parts loose grime. 50/50 water and vinegar will get nuts and bolts cleaner than they have ever been, needing a rustproofing of some kind right away after drying, or at least some water dispersing agent until paint, parkerizing, bluing etc. can be applied. If your tank has a heater crank it up, if not heat up water on the stove to almost boiling. I also recommend a basket or plastic bin in there, don't let parts ride directly on the bottom of the tank. Somtimes a little brushing will be necessary on layered up gunk, but it's nice to fire it up, ignore it for half an hour and return to spotless parts waiting for a rinse off. -Chris
