The V8 Ford & Mercury used the same engine after the war till the 8BA /8CM family came along. Same engine, same color so it makes no difference in those years. Since there was only the one size 6-cylinder for cars in those years then it didn't matter what color is was.
Ford didn't start stylizing their engine compartments till the 50s. The bronze color was a big change when it came along.
