The dark blue color was how they could tell it was a 239 after they stopped stamping the 99A Mercury blocks. It was used up into the 8BA era for a while. The 8BA family of blocks had various colors depending on the year and CID. Bronze as one of them. Red was also used for trucks. Mercury 255 CID engines and some later trucks used a light green color.
