Bill - I couldn't agree more with your statement.
But as the one who created the dirty leg contraption as you call it, I wonder why you felt the need to trash the idea.....especially when you apparently don't like it when people don't follow your advice. Seems a bit contradictory to me.
The fundamental difference between installing a filter in the tank and the dirty leg is that the the filter traps the contaminants in the tank (and they will sooner or later clog the filter) while the dirty leg removes the contaminants from the tank.
To each his own.........

Bad choice of words, Tim, I'm sorry. I suppose the dirty leg would be O.K. is the tank had smaller amounts & size of trash/rust. In more severe cases, the standpipe keeps it contained in the tank, like when a large flake can literally "block" off the outlet hole to the valve. Bill W.
