Same thing happened to me, except it was the modern-style ignition switch shorting against the tank. Big puff of smoke and car died. Blew the fuse and wiped out the wire, but that was an easy, if frustrating fix.
Another fan of installing a fuse to protect the harness with real world experience to boot...
