To address the question of worn out lining, I'd say there is plenty of lining.

Some "Long style" fingers are adjustable. If so, setting the fingers deeper will give more disengagement at the floor.

This, of course, requires adjustment of pedal linkage to coordinate travel length, free play at the top need only be an inch.
