Minor pitting is not a problem. What is a problem is when the screws have previously been tightened too tight, causing warpage of the mating surfaces. 51Woodie has the better solution (flat surface with emery paper) rather than hand sanding, as the two mating surfaces must be flat, without hills and gulleys.
