The one James Peterson used to make sounds similar the description in post #2. His were designed to attach to the dust cover band inside the generator. They likely both work a similar way except that I believe one of them replaces the 3rd brush so it's likely fully controlling the field current. They may both do that though I don't know. The Fun Projects unit only requires that the 3rd brush be adjusted to a specific amperage setting to work with it but it does work in a different way than the others.
