Just a personal experience on small batteries: In the late 70’s all I could find (or afford) was a too-small 6v battery. I made a box from 1/2” ply and placed the battery in that and installed it in the original battery hold frame. It was a food, firm fit. I don’t know if the wood was the cause, but that 3-yr warranteed battery lasted eight years.
