I went through the exercises described by others here, to no avail - the bugger refused to budge. I finally looked carefully at the bearing race surface and noted that there was almost no wear and decided to leave it and use it as is. Unlike the upper bearing, the lower bearing sits in a pool of oil, carries a low rotational force, hence minimal potential for wear.
