That's what the extra holes do. They allow water from the engine to circulate past the T'stat so it gets warm water quickly. I have 3 x 1/8" holes in mine and have run that way for years. If there are no holes, it takes too long for the T'stat to get warm enough to open and when it does, there is a surge of water that can overwhelm to radiator.
