I wanted to convert mine to 12V also but was told by one vendor that the 12 V field coils were no longer available, and I couldn't find a used 12V generator to get one from. I ended up ordering a remanufactured generator from Rock Auto (look for 1964 Galaxie 390 V8 - other years are the same), AC Delco 3341001. It only cost about $45 and I got it 3 days later, even with international shipping. I was planning to use it for parts, but when I disassembled it, the whole thing looked brand new. I just trimmed the rear housing to circular and used the old front housing and it worked out perfectly.
