My grandfather was a rural mail carrier in East Texas for a lot of years.The rural carriers, at least at that time, had to provide their own cars. He drove Model A's for as long as he could find a decent used one because they were so narrow. He could sit behind the wheel and lean over to put the mail in the boxes on the right hand side of the car.
Later on when automatic transmissions became more prevalent he switched to them and drove from the right hand side while delivering. I still see rural mail carriers doing this today.
