Default The only thing between you and disaster....

I probably should have done this when I first got my T, but the other day I decided to add grease to the steering gears. I've never had the wheel off before. I pulled the wheel and something dropped to the floorboard. I was expecting it to be the wheel/shaft key. What I found was a section of a 6 penny nail that had been cut to length which was acting as the key! The diameter was barely enough to rise above the keyway in the shaft, and the steel in a nail is kind of soft, so in no way was it adequate to keep the wheel from spinning on the shaft. I think the only thing between me and disaster was the rust that had developed between the wheel hub and shaft!

I've seen where folks have used nails in place of cotter pins, which is bad enough. But to take your life in your hands with a shortcut like this is suicidal!
