Most people do not know that an OD in a car, any car, requires a low gear ratio in the rear end.
Case in point, a '58-59 Ford F100 V8 has a standard rear gear ratio of 3.73, the same truck with a factory OD has a rear gear ratio of 3.89.
Most of the early Ford V8's had a standard gear ratio of 4.11, therefore an addition of an OD, regardless of which style worked very well. I think Ford went to the .3.78 ratio in about '46 and later, therefore the rear end needs to be re-geared..
