Generally speaking, the reason you would use a gasket sealant is to make up for bent/uneven/damaged gasket sealing surfaces. Correcting those issues when doing the rear end assemble rebuild eliminates leaks, along with the need for gasket sealers.

Below are a few pictures showing how the axle housing gasket surfaces should be repaired. Use a file on the differential housing to remove the 'proud areas' around each bolt hole, and then follow-up with a hand countersink to clean the perimeter. Don't forget to check run-out in the entire housing itself to ensure the hubs will be in-line with the centerline of the rear end assy.
