Ford types have the rectangular shaped side cover & R10 overdrive and are common for the early 50s but the frame mounted pedals in 1949 thru 1951 required Fords to have mountings on the side cover for the clutch actuator parts. The gears first major change was in 1951 but they did change again in the Y-block years with the 259 series as Mac mentioned.

There is always a possibility that it could be a Borg Warner T85 with the R11 overdrive. These transmissions have a curved bottom edge on the side cover and should have R11 casting marks on the OD unit. These were the heavy duty 3-speed W/OD. You just never know what might be attached to these old cars.
