The MMO story is that the owner of a garment manufacturing ('sweat shop')
in NYC got many complaints from the stitchers that the sewing machine oil
smelled bad. The owner combined some spindle oil with some Oil of Wintergreen which has a pleasant aroma. Oil of Wintergreen, an organic ester, acts as a detergent.
Modern engine oils sometimes combine different types of synthetic oils to enhance performance. For example a little di-ester is added to PAO to get beneficial detergent action because PAO doesn't accept additives easily. This combination is used in some screw compressors to prevent varnish build up.
