Stainless valves do OK if they have hard chromed stems. If not then they should be run in a bronze lined guide. They have a tendency to gaul against a cast iron guide surface.

Aircraft engines use the sodium filled SS exhaust valves but they run in high chrome type valve guides now days. Bronze type guides wore out too quickly and required 300-hour inspections for wear.
