If you are careful and do a lot of flushing, you can do a pretty good desludging with just pan and manigold off...remove the baffles, scrub away with lots of solvent in valley until all moves downstairs. Repeat in upper crankcase, rorating the assembly and hosing away gnerously to get rid of all the stuff that lodged there. Take a break and have the actual pan hot tanked...
You really should go to PCV for engine protection ( I think I can replicate a 1943 OEM setup with available parts, now), but at least go to 180 thermostats to slow down recrudification. Get rid of the adaptor that is holding gauge sender 3" up in the air...your gauge has NO idea what's going on in the engine!
Scrape away carbon on ridge in cylinders, see if you have serious wear ridge or not.
See if engine is original sleeved version or not...
