This might sound like a mute point but is the rear axle either spring or shackles removed to pull the axle rearward? Also, make sure your brake cross shaft isn't the problem with the torque tube on it. put two pry bars that will fit on each side and having someone pull from the rear and pry from the front on both sides it should come free.
