Could be the electric water and/or the thermostat gave out. The electric water pump is known to fail around 100k miles. Too much plastic is used throughout the BMW engine to reduce weight.

I’ve got 120k miles on my 328i and I’m going to get the water pump replaced before it goes out and leaves me stranded.
