Andy, the new Benton Gray mat will come with a modern type backing. It is fine to use if you desire.
To remove the old mat, you'll need to do (obviously) what's necessary. It wasn't originally glued and hopefully (my guess) it isn't now. rather, it's just "stuck" in places from being there so long.
Usually it can be removed fairly easily - no scraping required, just "rolling" with your fingers.
