I would like to clean it up and maybe apply some corrosion inhibitor. Then it would be ready for install on new glass.

IIRC heat is the way to go. Don't remember if the advise was a heat gun or a torch. You might give this place a call and ask. He is a car guy and very helpful. He should be able to give you the correct way to go in short order.
