Chris,

You really don't have a choice about the upper flywheel housing as it is attached to the block behind where the flywheel goes and you cannot install the flywheel after you install the oil pan as the combined opening at the rear of the flywheel housing and oil pan is too small to add the flywheel once the pan and flywheel housing are in place. I use non-hardening gasket maker to glue the pan gasket to the pan and to attach the cork band to the underside of the rear main bearing cap.

I do not use an engine stand, but rather carefully lower the engine down into the oil pan sitting on the ground or low work surface with a hydraulic engine hoist. I use a couple of long drift pins through several of the holes in the pan to line the pan up with the holes in the mating surface of the engine block.

You'll have to use the threaded hole in the side of the block near its bottom to hold the oil pump in place as the pump will not defy gravity on its own (dumb design not repeated on the V8s).
