Ford Used the letter I as a #1 character and the 9 was also a special character with an odd shape . I think F was the only letter character that was added to denote right hand drive on vehicles so equipped if I remember correctly. Ford did this to better tell if numbers were in fact Ford Motor ID numbers for theft prevention I assume.
