That may be but, it was the only thing available.
The aluminum I was working with was old traffic signs. They were free but, I didn't want the printed surface to show. It was in about '69 so, I assumed epoxy, rather than anything else available, in that day. But, my point is, that anything that peens a surface, will expand it, in relation to the opposing side and to be careful with thin sections of sheet metal.
