She was the fastest on wheels. Women have gone a lot faster in air and space craft. Jet powered land speed runners are barely on the earth during a run. Keeping those wheels on the ground is tricky at high speed. No one is saying what happened but controllability of an F104 was a lot easier when they had wings. Lake bed conditions would have a large effect as well. She got the chance to take another run at it and she took it. Opportunities don't grow on trees so I wouldn't blame her for that. She went out doing what she wanted to do. None of us are going to make it out of this adventure we are on alive.
