I second this opinion.
I just had a very similar condition of my own making. I thought I would be clever and route a hose from the oil cap to the air filter (modern carb). All I accomplished was to push a half quart of oil out the back of the engine because it could not breathe. I put the an-altered original cap back on and no more leak.
