When I was a mechanic in the coal mines , I have mashed my fingers more than once, as a matter of fact a lot of times.
Once I was clearing a coal Shute in the tipple, when I found a 6 foot roof bolt curled up like a horse shoe, as soon I touched it, it came loose like a coiled spring , mashed my thumb and tooked the nail right off, In the emergency room the doctor cleaned it up ,and was explaining to me how the nail would start growing back on , when I held up my other thumb and said you mean like this , which was half way on. He just shook his head and walked away.
