The tank 'filter/spark arrestor' acts as an anti-sloshing device to help stabilize the gas while zig-zagging through traffic in my escapes from fast following police cars. The 'spark arrestor' assists the tank's internal baffles in minimizing the sloshing movement of the gasoline.
AND - I like the historical accuracy of the device, as included in the original design of the Ford Model A.
