This will vary depending upon the application and the oil being used. Also how well the oil is being distributed to the top end is going to be a consideration. I have a 272 with almost 200K miles since it's rebuild and I check the valves at 40K mile intervals which is when I put spark plugs in it. Very rarely needs much valve lash adjustment if any. Spark plugs always look good but electronic ignition is the reason for that as well as keeping the carburetor in working condition. Ted Eaton.
