Checking both the owner's manual and the service manual for my '55 Merc I found no spec for valve adjustment based on mileage. When they get noisy, adjust 'em. The spec is .019" for intake and exhaust, hot. If they're still too noisy go down to .017" to account for the wear on the rockers where they contact the valves. If you don't want to deal with adjusting them hot add 1/1000 to those figures.
