I've been running an Airtex electric pump for just about 10 years. I had some problems the other day, thought it was fuel related, so I pulled the pump. The pump was OK, but the little inlet filter they come with was shot -- the constant vibration of the pump had caused the element to come loose in the housing, and the element was shucking pieces of itself into the pump and on to the carb. I'm going to replace it with a separately-mounted larger filter.
Naturally the "fuel-related" problem turned out to be a bad coil
