Agree Sounds like the station wagon was finished with an interior varnish/poly.
Best Marine varnish I have ever used is Epipanes. Expensive but with many coats it lasts and lasts. Read the instructions, put on 7 to 10 coats. Regular marine varnish is impacted with car wash soaps.

Sitkins varnish is pretty good, but Epipanes is the very best.
