I've found two different diagrams of d44 axles. This one doesn't not show a seal between the retainer plate and sealed bearing. On another thread regarding the same issue, I've been told there is a seal. A drivetrain specialist (phone call) also referenced the seal and part number.
I've tried to get the seal to seat or sit in or out of the retainer plate but I'm assuming it would go inside of it against the bearing, as there's space in the concave portion of the retainer plate.
I'll get a pic of what I have shortly.
