I remember an old Popular Science article that explained how to make your own gated shifter for a side shift 3-speed. This was before folks could buy them for the side shift transmissions. It's a way lot more easy to find an old Hurst unit and fabricate all the linkages than to go through all that. The Hurst shifters likely were made that way in the beginning. A lot of the aftermarket part manufacturing started out in guys garages.
