I do it a little different. I remove the cork gasket from the area where the two ropes ( top and bottom ) meet. I also do not trim the rope most of the time. When the cork gasket Is removed as mentioned, you can leave the rope more proud of the mounting surfaces. This assures a tight rope to rope joint putting pressure on the crank a full 360 degrees.
