Again, the early design with adjustable shoe anchors are 39-42 and the
later design with self-centering shoes are 46-48. The part number prefixes for the later design are 51-A indicating 1945 start for 1946 models.

And the answer to the question is: For a 1940, must use a #38 shoe which has a ROUND hole in the bottom that the round eccentric cam fits into. The oblong hole in the later #37 shoe allows the flat-sided cam to move up-down to automatically center the shoe in the drum when the brakes are applied.
